Group Reading
While you read pages 537-539 as a group, create timelines in your notebooks. Title your timeline "History of South Africa." It should include the following events in order:
  • wars
  • discoveries
  • who is colonizing when



Define apartheid. 
Discuss Nelson Mandela. Terrorist or hero? 

 
Bell Work: What will you remember from 9th grade Geography in 5 years?

1-Peer Review essays with rubrics.
2-Work on and turn in any missing work.

**Remember! Wednesday is the last day to turn in anything for Geography class. (B-Day will still be able to turn things in in class on Thursday.)
 
Bell Work: study for the test!

Turn in: "Middle East Unit Assessment" study guide, notebooks, and any missing work. (Here's the key to the study guide in case you missed the review in class!)

Essay test: students write a 5-paragraph essay on one of the topics that we have studied and reviewed this unit. When done, students compare their essay to the rubric to predict how they did. Then, with remaining time, they are free to revise their essay to get the highest score possible. 

Announcements: Remember that WEDNESDAY is the last day for any late work. I'll be at school until 4:45 that day. 


**You can still do the EXTRA CREDIT discussions where you teach someone else about one of the 4 prompts for 10 minutes. Just get me a signed note by 4:45 on Wednesday.
 
Bell Work: "Thoughtful Reflection" wkst.
1-Turn in Life for Women in the Middle East chart.
2- Brainstorming activity to review for the essay test on Monday/Tuesday!
          A) With the person sitting next to you, come up with vocab words, and concepts that you would need to cover to write a FANTASTIC essay on that prompt.
          B) Jot down an outline: with a thesis, three main points and a conclusion sentence. 
          C) Share and discuss as a class. 

HOMEWORK: Unit essay test is on Monday the 6th for A day students and Tuesday the 7th for B day students. 


**Extra credit opportunity**
Explain your whole complex answer to one prompt to someone your age or older, answering their questions (have an educated discussion/teach them) for 10 or more minutes. Get a signed note saying that you have done so. Each session of this will earn you 3 points. You can do it a total of 4 points. Each session needs to be on a different prompt.

Research Instructions:
1.    Go to womanstats.org
2.    Click “login to the database” on the left. Then click "login"
    a.     Username: acatnamedstevens

Then click "view data"
3.    See where it says, "Select a variable"? That’s where you scroll down to find your question’s variable code.
4.    See where it says, Select a country"? Click the arrows to find your two countries.
5.    Click Retrieve Data.
6.    Skim through your results to find answers to your questions for both countries. Write the answers on the back. Your answers should fill all of the space provided. 


Homework: Finish your research at home if you did not finish in class. Also, brainstorm some more on your Middle East Unit Assessment sheet.

 
Bell Work: How did Osama bin Laden get his start?

1-finish reading ObL's Fatwa as groups. Complete wkst and turn it in. 
2-Discuss what you found interesting/surprised you.
3-Prepare to research sharia law in the Middle East. 
4-Middle East Unit Assessment preparation (the essay test will be after Christmas).

Bell Work: What about Islam and Judaism is different than you thought before?

1-Read an article about Palestinian Refugees in groups.

Palestinian refugees struggle to survive
  • Each member of the group has a job: Reader, Questioner (asks questions to clarify what you just read), Vocab Spotter (points out words whose definitions they don't know), and Summarizer (summarizes the paragraph's point).
  • After each paragraph, pause and discuss by everyone doing their jobs.
2-Each student writes a paragraph (3-5 sentence) summary of the article's main points (in your notebook).
3-As a class, Israeli-Palestinian situation. 
  • Most countries support the plan to make Palestine a sovereign country...almost all besides the US feel this way.
Why would the US side with the Israelis? 
  • Israeli/Jewish culture is more similar to American culture (no polygamy, no real dress restrictions, etc.)
  • Americans still feel guilt for not stepping in earlier to help end the Holocaust.

Bell Work: What have you heard about Jews and Muslims?

1. Teach your group about the energy source that you researched on a laptop in class last Monday or the Friday before. You need to have notes in your notebook answering the 4 questions about each of the 4 energy sources (see previous blogpost for more instructions).
2. Write 2-3 sentences evaluating. Which energy source do you think we should be investing in/depending on? Why? Weigh the advantages and disadvantages.

NEW TOPIC! (HOMEWORK FOR 4B)
Today we learned about Islam and Judaism via a powerpoint/lecture. Your responsibility is to write down 10 interesting facts about each religion. Then, in your notebook, draw a three-way venn diagram comparing Judaism, Islam, and another religion you are familiar with. (You need two items in each space.) 

**Also be thinking of questions you would like to ask our Muslim guest speaker on Friday!!
